Ruthless Raja - An unforgettable experience or a ruthless challenge
In March, on the snowy spring of Kainuu’s eastern border, the vast silence of the wilderness is filled with the brilliant light of a spring day. At its best, the skier is treated to stunning views of trees covered in frost and the bright white snowdrifts, all set against the backdrop of rugged hills that sparkle under the gently warming rays of the sun. But nature can also be merciless, with challenges like biting cold or a fierce snowstorm.
Skiing distances for every taste
The event, starting from Arola and Raatteen Portti, offers ski distances of 25 km and 100 km in traditional skiing style. You can also choose the 50 km route, which takes you from Kylpylä Kiannon Kuohu to Raatteen Portti and back. The event is timed and includes a bit of competition, but it is primarily meant to be enjoyed, each in its own way.

The history of Ruthless Raja
The history of Ruthless Raja dates back to the traditional Border Skiing event organized by border guards in Suomussalmi, which was revived in 2017 with a new concept. The successful event was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now in 2025, Ruthless Raja is back, embracing the same serene wilderness atmosphere—this time with the added warmth of the late-winter sun!
