Route description
Raatteen Maraton is run on the Raattentie, known for the battles of the Winter War. The start takes place from the Raatteentie border barrier, where runners are transported by bus. The marathon route includes several war battle sites and memorials, i.e. you run in the original battle environment.
Marathon route from the Raatteentie border zone barrier to the centre of Ämmänsaari (19 km gravel road, continues on asphalt and at the end 3 km gravel park paths; 34 km of public road, rest of the way 8 km of pedestrian and bicycle routes).
The half marathon starts at Majatalo Karhun Pesä (formerly Karhun Pesä), and follows the same route as the marathon, ending with a common finish in the municipal center.
10 km start and finish are in front of Spa Kiannon Kuohut. The route runs from the centre of Suomussalmi along the coastal route towards Suomussalmi Church Village. The turning point is before the Haukiperä junction, from where you return by the same route. The route is the largest part of the beach route, so it is very pleasant to run.
Service points
There are service points on the route every 4-5 km. The points offer water, sports drink, non-carbonated cola drink (last 2 service points) and raisins.

War History
The history of Raatteen tie is worth exploring at Raatteen Port, where the renewed and expanded exhibition “Winter War in Suomussalmi” is on display. There are several monuments along Raatteen tie and a guard museum at the eastern end of the road. The Raatteen maraton running route is itself a battlefield famous for the Winter War, and the route includes running through a stone field erected to commemorate the Winter War. Stones on the emotive field depict the number of casualties and clocks in the middle of the field depict the 105th day of the war.
Culture
There are many interesting things to see in Suomussalmi, such as Turjanlinna, the former residence of author Ilmari Kianto, Soiva metsä and Hiljainen kansa.
